 「ヴァルディカーヴァ」は、モンタルチーノの丘の北東に位置するカンティーナ。
 カンティーナでは、「ロッソ・ディ・モンタルチーノ」「ブルネッロ・ディ・
 モンタルチーノ」「ブルネッロ・ディ・モンタルチーノ・マドンナ・デル・ピアーノ」の
 三種のワインをリリースしています。
 
 また、こちらの醸造家は、ガヤやサン・ジュスト・ア・レンテンナーノのワインにも
 携わっている、イタリアワイン界の名人、アッティリオ・パーリ氏とのこと。
 昼夜の温度差が大きいこの地にて、ブドウは並外れて複雑な個性を内包するとされ、
 カンティーナでも「“GENIUS LOCI”と呼ばれるこの地区の、魂とでも言うべきものを
 より素晴らしく表現するために、ワインの内なる個性を引き出すことに最も注意を
 払っている」と言っています。

The gamy 2010 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job of presenting
intensity and elegance all in the same delicious package. That's not
easy to do and the excellent 2010 fruit plays a big role in achieving
this goal. The wine offers a long succession of aromas that span from
ripe fruit, to smoked meat, to grilled herb and soft spice. Delicate
tones of licorice, cola and anise seed add life and energy. The list
goes on. The wine's mouthfeel is best characterized by softness and
structure, a two-fold approach that gives high hopes for the long aging
potential of this wine. Valdicava's Brunello will appeal to those who
love earthy and leathery notes in their Brunello.

Valdicava’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, brooding effort
loaded with black cherries, smoke, tar and earthiness. This expressive,
powerful wine needs at least another year or two to settle down. While
not as extreme as the 2001, it stands apart for its intensity of color
and the sheer volume of its extract. In 2003 the Brunello spent three
and a half years in 45 and 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks. Abruzzese
says the spring rains in the northern part of Montalcino left the wines
with enough water reserves to mature without going into hydric stress.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a huge,
towering wine. Waves of vibrant, intensely perfumed fruit hit the palate,
backed up by the firm, broad tannins of the vintage. Violets, spices,
new leather and licorice develop in the glass, yet the 2006 remains
painfully young and stubborn. Clean mineral notes frame a blast of dark
cherries, plums and camphor on the palate-staining finish. Readers will
need to be especially patient, but the 2006 Madonna del Piano is
stacking up to be one of the all-time greats from proprietor Vincenzo
Abbruzzese. I followed the wine over the course of two days, during
which it continued to improve while seeming to gain freshness and
structure. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a stunning
and superb wine that will simply blow you away. This Riserva is at its
prime so you should not miss the opportunity to taste it soon (within
the next two to three years) if you have a bottle in your cellar. Aged
aromas of old spice and leather are creeping forward, but there’s
plenty of kirsch, cherry liqueur, cola, mocha, prune, licorice, menthol,
bramble and rosemary twig to keep those tertiary aromas from taking over
completely. In fact, there’s loads of life still packed within the
brooding, thick texture you behold before your eyes. The tannins are
fine and smooth. It’s a beauty now, and although I’m assigning a
longer drinking window because that’s what it merits, I also think it’
s too good to pass up now. Decant four hours prior to serving. Drink:
2014-2024.
