In its sweetly ripe cherry fruit and relatively open, silken-textured yet refreshing palate, the Potel 2006 Charmes-Chambertin aptly illustrates the virtues of its site and vintage. Suggestions of red berry and herbal distillates, musk, vanilla, and a whiff of game add complexity that follows into a soothing, lingering finish. I see no reason to wait to enjoy this, but I expect it will continue to delight for 8-10 years.

The tangy griotte (morello) cherry-scented 1999 Charmes-Chambertin is medium to dark ruby-colored. This zesty, fresh, and highly delineated wine is crammed with raspberries, cherries, tangy currants, and juicy blueberries. It has outstanding purity and an extraordinarily long, suave finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

The Potel 2006 Mazoyeres-Chambertin brings a bit of the incense and resin to bear in the nose that the corresponding Mazis delivers in spades. Here, though, there is greater purity of ripe red fruit and a plush texture. Chalky, meaty elements impinge on the sappy fruit and pungent herbs in an energetically interactive and piquant finish. It will be fascinating to permit this to perform over the next half dozen or more years. Lesne indicates that half of the fruit here originates in a relatively cool, late-harvested portion of the site that really promotes aromas if not high must weight. Classic rose petal and licorice ? along with scents of dark berries and smoked meat ? rise from the glass of Potel 2006 Chambertin, which comes to an almost bitter point of berry and herb concentration on its plush yet palpably chalky, extract-rich palate. This preserves the elegance and lift that are part of so many of the nest wines of its vintage, without sacrificing strength of flavor or structure. It finishes with ripe, refreshing, sappy fruit intensity, mineral invigoration, carnal mystery, and a shower of rose petals and should be well worth following for 12-15 years.

Here is a 2005 Chambertin that rivals the rose petals of Clos de Beze, along with licorice, a ripeness of red fruit, a suggestion of peach jam, and a pungency of cinnamon that turns tactile on the palate. A chocolate richness and liqueur-like fruit intensity in the mouth never lose sight of the rose petals, nor cover up the chalk, wet stone and roasted meat that underlie a sumptuous, sultry finish. “Round,” “rich” and “resonant” gain new meaning with this stunningly opulent Pinot.
