| Young Vincent Dureuil must rate as one of Burgundy’s great overachievers,
demonstrating the quality that is possible in the Cote Chalonnaise and
offering a lesson in passionate ambition by having built his own estate
prior to inheriting that of his father. Since 1997, given his opportunity
to farm one piece of property in the high-rent districts of the Cote de
Nuits, wine lovers have a new standard by which to measure Dureuil’s capability
as a vintner. But just consider what he has accomplished from the humblest
of appellations with his excellent value 2005 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain.
This displays ripe, plump, but by any standard exceptionally pure raspberry
and pomegranate fruit character, refined tannins, and a generous finish.
Dureuil uses some new wood even on this blend of Pinot and Gamay, but I
don’t notice it. |

早くから楽しめそうなのが、アン･ゲンヌです。 素晴らしい収穫を得たジャンティアルを早く味わいたいのであれば、このワインをお勧めいたします。 |
| Cheek by jowl with some of Dureuil’s best white wine parcels grows his
2005 Rully En Guesnes (rhymes with “ken”). This displays a Cabernet Franc-like
combination of sweet florality, citrus zest, clove, and machine oil on
the nose, along with the ripe, faintly tart red fruits that form a common
thread for this domaine in 2005. The perfume penetrates deeply into the
weave of this wine, along with spices, chalk and intense fresh fruit. This
is finer-grained than the En Rosey, although is in no way soft or plush,
and the new wood component is undetectable. The finish is pure, clear and
penetrating, with an incisiveness that by no means all tasters will appreciate
equally. Imagine an already fine, rather high-strung Pinot into which some
Riesling and Muscat d’Alsace has been blended, and you’ll get the idea!

| From relatively low-lying premier cru soil and old vines, the Dureuil 2005
Rully Clos de Chapitre offers bright red pomegranate and raspberry aromatics,
but with jammy and distilled aspects, pungent ginger and citrus rind, flowers,
and vivid raw beef bloodiness. There is plenty of richness but also plenty
of underlying structure as well as the energetic, brightly penetrating
aspects common to all of Dureuil’s 2005s. The fine, long finish adds a
mineral dimension to the aforementioned complexities and gives promise
of a decade’s worth of entertaining value. |

| From a choice section of 65-year-old vines above Premeaux Prissey acquired
through his in-laws, Dureuil’s 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos des Argilieres
displays aromas raw of raw beef liver that approaches Cornas-like intensity
and vivid bloodiness, along with intensely ripe black cherry, wood smoke,
and distinctly wet stone minerality. A similar fruit-animal-mineral trio
? augmented by pungent brown spices ? dominates this wine’s intensely rich
and sappy but firmly structured, dense palate, and these flavors cling
with memorable tenacity. Lock this away for 7-10 years. Come to think of
it, at this end of Dureil’s list, too, you get excellent value. |
