The 2013 Leoville-Las Cases has perhaps one of the most understated bouquets for this estate in recent years. I do not mean that in a bad sense, after all, this was a vintage whereby it would be foolish to push too much. It gently unfolds with blackberry, bilberry and a light marine influence - iodine, a hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely balanced with a saline note that comes through towards the finish. I appreciate the cohesiveness and refinement of this Leoville-Las Cases, certainly one of the best Medocs of this difficult vintage.

One of the more formidably backward and potentially long-lived wines of the vintage, the medium to full-bodied 2011 Leoville Las Cases behaves like a first-growth, which in a sense it truly is. Revealing a dense inky/purple color, it is a structured, rich, impressively endowed effort that is meant for the long haul. Atypical for this vintage, it requires 5-7 years of bottle age and should drink well for two decades thereafter. The final blend was 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Yields were a low 27 hectoliters per hectare, and the natural alcohol achieved 13.4%.

Another titanic effort from the Delon family, the 2005 Leoville Las Cases is probably the greatest wine made at this estate since Jean-Hubert Delon’s father produced the 1986 and 1996. Only 37% of the production made it into the 2005, a blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with less than 13% Merlot and Cabernet Franc. An inky/ruby/purple color is accompanied by reticent aromatics that, with considerable coaxing, offer up subtle notes of toasty vanillin intermixed with lead pencil shavings, wet rocks, and enormously ripe, intense black cherry and creme de cassis. The wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel as well as enormous extract, concentration, and purity. This ageless, monumental claret requires a minimum of 15-20 years to approach maturity, and should last for a half century. It is about as classic a Leoville Las Cases as one will find. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2060

If it were not for the prodigious 1996, everyone would be concentrating on getting their hands on a few bottles of the fabulous 1995 Leoville-Las-Cases, which is one of the vintage's great success stories. The wine boasts an opaque ruby/purple color, and exceptionally pure, beautifully knit aromas of black fruits, minerals, vanillin, and spice. On the attack, it is staggeringly rich, yet displays more noticeable tannin than its younger sibling. Exceptionally ripe cassis fruit, the judicious use of toasty new oak, and a thrilling mineral character intertwined with the high quality of fruit routinely obtained by Las Cases, make this a compelling effort. There is probably nearly as much tannin as in the 1996, but it is not as perfectly sweet as in the 1996. The finish is incredibly long in this classic. Only 35% of the harvest was of sufficient quality for the 1995 Leoville-Las-Cases. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.

The 1971 is an unbalanced Leoville-Las Cases, exhibiting too much tannin, a loosely knit structure, and fruity flavors that seem to dissipate rapidly in the glass. It is an austere, unyielding wine in which the tannin clearly has the edge over the fruit. Nevertheless, there is interest in the bouquet, and the color remains sound. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 10/90.

The second wine, the newly-named 2009 Le Petit Lion, is composed of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Sauvignon. Made in an up-front, fruity style, it exhibits notes of underbrush, unsmoked cigar tobacco, blackberries and black raspberries. Medium-bodied, soft, round and easy-going, it can be enjoyed over the next decade.

The 2013 Clos du Marquis has a commendable bouquet with lifted, brambly black fruit, bay leaf and an attractive seaweed note. The palate is medium-bodied, a little hard on the entry and quite structured for a 2013. If you can abide the austerity, not a common trait for Clos du Marquis, you will enjoy this wine, especially its tertiary/undergrowth-influenced finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

Rating: 87points
Drink: 1997 - 2005

I am not a great believer in the quality of most second wines, as they tend to be a dumping ground for everything deemed not desirable for the grand vin. However, such second wines as Forts de Latour, Bahans-Haut-Brion, Pavillon Rouge de Chateau Margaux, and Clos du Marquis are serious wines that possess the character of their more complex and concentrated siblings, yet are more supple and accessible. Clos du Marquis is not to be missed in the 1993-95 vintages. A cedary, spicy, tobacco, blackcurrant-scented nose offers plenty of attraction in this dark ruby-colored wine. Medium-bodied, with excellent richness, and a sweet, round palate impression, this is a delicious St.-Julien for drinking over the next 7-8 years.
