A brilliant effort, the 2005 is unquestionably the finest Certan de May since the decade of the eighties. A deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by scents of cedar, menthol, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, and cassis. The complex, fruit-filled aromatics are backed up by a full-bodied, rich palate with layers of fruit, firm structure, formidable tannin, and a backward style. This sensational Pomerol should prove to be very long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Tannic, rough-hewn, and backward, but also dense and promising, this dark plum/purple-tinged 2004 offers notes of forest floor, roasted herbs, asphalt, sweet black cherries, and minerals. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied, tannic, muscular Pomerol that requires 3-4 years of bottle age. It should drink well for 15+

Cracking up and losing its fruit at an accelerated pace, this medium garnet-colored wine shows notes of mint, tarragon, licorice, and sweet cherries, with rather annoying, damp, mushroomy, earthy characteristics in the background. In the mouth, the wine is disjointed, medium-bodied, and showing some sweet fruit but an increasingly attenuated/desiccated finish. Drink it up. Last tasted, 10/02.
